The article below will focus mainly on cerebral palsy, as it is one of the most common neurological disorders in babies, but the treatment and goals are very similar for most other pathologies.
What are the symptoms of Baby Cerebral Palsy?
Children with cerebral palsy experience issues with mobility, function and posture and balance. The aim of the rehabilitation process is to avoid further complications that may occur when passing through the different milestones, especially when beginning to walk, during growth and during the physical and hormonal changes of puberty.
What is the physiotherapy treatment for children with cerebral palsy?
Treatment of babies with cerebral palsy focuses on training and strengthening the patient’s muscles, in order to:
- Improve coordination
- Improve balance
- Build muscle strength and control
- Maintain flexibility
This will help increase motor function and maintain more control and reduce muscle spasticity. Sessions may include stretches, exercises and games build around using assistive equipment, tailored according to the child’s abilities, cognitive functioning, limitations and interests. Each session will use different games and movements, in order to keep the child interested and involved.
Through the treatment, the child should:
- Expand their range of joint motion
- Overcome physical limitations
- Learn alternative ways to perform tasks, based on their abilities
- Improve gait and posture
- Learn how to use adaptive equipment
- Experience less pain and discomfort
- Feel more independent
Parents will also learn how to use adaptive equipment and assist their child with physical tasks when needed. The more independent the child becomes via treatment, the less the parents will need to assist them and the whole family will be able to lead a healthier, happier life.
